Location
I took this photo outside the Floating Markets of Willamstad on the island of Curacao in April 2014. Willamstad is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an amazing Caribbean city, a true polyglot of a city with cultural influences from all over the globe.Time
The image was taken midday. As you can see the sky was overcast which was actually a blessing so close to the equator. It gave some nice light diffusion and did not wash out the pastel colors of the buildings.Lighting
Not particularly. Just as I said above, I was very lucky in shooting on a bright but overcast day. Curacao is a very southern Caribbean island, below the hurricane belt. If the sun is out, it runs the risk of washing out the lovely pastel colors of the buildings. Luckily the day I took this image, the sun was shining but the sky was some what overcast. So I got bright light but diffused.Equipment
Canon camera, kit lens. Nothing special.Inspiration
I had wanted to go to Curacao for 20 years. It is an amazing island. When this opportunity to came, I made a personal vow to photograph every square inch. And I did. My inspiration? Love.Editing
I try to do as little post-processing with my images as possible. I cropped, straightened, and did some slight color corrections but otherwise left the image alone. In my camera bag
I always carry at least one telephoto lens, a macro lens, a wide angle, back up batteries, SD card, about 5 - 6 microfiber cleaning cloths, business cards, a collapsible hood, and a selection of filters.Feedback
Take a stupid number of photos. Different angles, different times of day if possible. Different lenses. But take lots and lots of photos. And just do what works for you. I've been known to take a macro image with my telephoto lens to get the right look. I took about eight shots of these boats, I only like two and this was my favorite. When I flew over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter I took over 500 pictures and I think there are only 10 that I truly like. Don't be afraid to take too many pictures.
