Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during "Tulip Time" in Holland, MI. where every May the tulips blossom in the parks, along the streets, and on tulip farms.

Time

I took this in Centennial Park near the heart of downtown Holland, MI. Every year I spend at least one day wondering through the parks and along the streets to take pictures of a few of the six million tulips that are planted every Fall. This photo was captured at 2 p.m. thankfully it was an overcast day.

Lighting

This is 100% natural light with no diffusers, only the clouds. I do bring along a Lastolite diffuser just in case the sun pops out from behind the clouds.

Equipment

The body I used was a crop sensor Canon 7D II, with a 70-200 / f2.8 IS II USM.

Inspiration

There is a large water fountain in the middle of the park with thousands of tulips planted all around the fountain. I chose this angle because of the aqua background produced by the water in the fountain. The black lines behind the tulips are the spindle iron fence that encircles the fountain.

Editing

I post process all my photos in Adobe Lightroom. This photo was sharpened and dehazed a touch.

In my camera bag

I carry two Canon bodies: a 1Dx full frame and a 7D II crop sensor. Lenses: 70-200 / f 2.8 II IS USM, 24-70 / f 2.8 II IS USM, 16-35 / f 2.8 II IS USM, 85mm / f 1.2 II IS USM, 100 macro / f 2.8 II USM. Tripod: Gitzo carbonfiber with a Really Right Stuff BH 40 ball head and Lee ND filter system.

Feedback

Holland, Michigan is a great place to visit the first or second week of May. Tulip Lane is a route that winds throughout the city where tulips planted along the curbsides. Downtown is a beautifully renovated city with shops, and restaurants, and benches, and flowers everywhere you look. You can't miss getting great shots during Tulip Time in Holland, Michigan!
