Behind The Lens

Location

In my kitchen, on top of the gas stove.

Time

It was early evening when my wife was not yet occupying the kitchen.

Lighting

I set up a remote controlled flash, first to take a shot of the smoke and then another shot with the same flash bounced off the ceiling for the pot and the coffee. The gas stove was shot using long exposure. I covered the back of the stove with a black cloth in order to make the steam coming form the pot more visible.

Equipment

My camera is a Canon 5D Mark II, the lens a Canon 50mm 1.2, a Manfrotto tripod and a canon 580EX II speedlite flash with a remote drigger.

Inspiration

Every morning I love to drink this coffee when I realized that the drama of the boiling coffee, the steam and the gas might make a good picture. It also challenged me to deal with the light set up of the different scenarios as it is impossible, I think, to take this shot straight out of the camera.

Editing

I had to combine the 3 different pictures into one, first the shot of the gas fire, then the one with the steam coming out of the pot and lastly the boiling coffee inside as well as the pot. For this, I used layers in photoshop.

In my camera bag

I always bring my 100mm macro lens as I love to take pictures of small animals and flowers, and my workhorse lens, which is the canon 24-100mm zoom.

Feedback

I think one needs to know how to capture the different light situations, know how to work the camera manually and use the right equipment such as a flash, remote trigger and a good tripod. It’s a learning progress and requires extra effort and time. Usually I have a vision in my head and then I try and figure out how to do it...not always successfully of course.
