I love the artistic nature of this composition. The colours while dark in nature are so beautiful. The pounding of the surf is so dynamic!

Behind The Lens

Location

One of my favorite photo op spots is along the California coastline near Monterey. This particular photo was taken on a very warm January day during an incredible surf.

Time

The late afternoon sun on this particular day was reflecting off the water resulting in the most intense colors of blue and turquoise. It was a photo waiting to happen!

Lighting

The late afternoon sun was at just about the right angle which made it much easier to get the softer light on the rocks and waves without either being over or underexposed.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Nikon D7100 with a Nikkor 18-105mm lens mounted on a sturdy carbon fiber tripod. Other than a polarizing filter, no other equipment was necessary.

Inspiration

The incredible surf on this particular trip was all the inspiration I needed to take many photos at this spot. The cormorants on the rocks were completely unconcerned about the crashing surf around them, and I felt they added to the overall mood of this photo.

Editing

Using Lightroom and Photoshop CS6, I brought out the intensities of the blues in the water just a bit, and lightened up the shadows. I then applied a couple of filters to give a bit of a watercolor feel to it and to make it more interesting.

In my camera bag

Since this photo was taken I have upgraded to a Nikon D750 with a Nikkor 24-120mm lens. I also carry a Nikkor 70-300mm lens. Additionally, I always have 2 64gb cards, polarizing filters and UV filters for both lenses, a round variable Tiffen ND filter, a carbon fiber tripod, and two spare batteries in my bag.

Feedback

Time of day is crucial for photographing the ocean. Late afternoon I feel is usually the best time as the light is softer and reflects off the waves nicely. And you never know when you're going to be rewarded with a glorious sunset on the California coast!
