Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at a natural lake in SW Colorado, USA.

Time

A snow storm enveloped the area early on in the afternoon. When it suddenly began to lift, I jumped in my truck and drove out to a couple of areas where I could hike to a good vantage point quite quickly. By the time I got to a shooting position for this image, it would have been 4pm. The weather conditions completely governed my movements on that day.

Lighting

When lighting and weather conditions are constantly changing, all a photographer has left is his choice of shooting position. Since I knew the terrain quite well, I was able to make the best use of available light and make the cliff contrast with the background.

Equipment

I believe this was shot using my Canon 70D and the Sigma 70-200. I usually travel light, but will often have two cameras ready to go with my favorite lenses.

Inspiration

I've shot many fall photos over the years, but when fall and winter meet, the results can be astounding. The stage of fall is a big factor, and this was too good to miss!

Editing

I try to keep processing to a minimum, but I usually tweak brightness and contrast as a developer would.

In my camera bag

I've adjusted over the years, and in a dusty outdoor environment where the perfect shot can be gone in a few seconds, I often carry one or two cameras, ready to shoot. I prefer good zoom lenses over primes, since they offer the flexibility I need.

Feedback

Watch the weather. Be prepared to go out and shoot in less than perfect conditions, because that perfect shot will not wait for you.
