As I hiked through a Colorado aspen forest after the colors had peaked, I spotted a burst of color on the next slope and tracked it down. These few trees showed one last display of orange-red leaves, and I was glad to have seen and enjoyed it.

Great point of view. I love Aspen trees. Reminds me of time spent in Colorado.

Location
This shot was taken in the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado.Time
I visited this patch of forest early in the afternoon, since that seemed optimal for natural lighting.Lighting
I almost always have to work with the conditions I'm presented with, so it's important to make note of the location, weather and time of day to get the best lighting in a forest.Equipment
I've been using my Canon 6D mk II as my primary set-up. I don't use tripods or filters unless I absolutely have to.Inspiration
It was actually near the very end of the fall colors, and I challenged myself to go out and find one more good shot. I spotted color in the (almost bare) canopy from a distance, and hiked until I found the trees you see in the shot. I think it was worth the effort!Editing
I try to avoid the temptation to do too much editing as I prefer to portray the landscape as I see it. I usually just tweak lighting and contrast. In my camera bag
I travel light; I usually carry the body and lens I intend to use for the day, a spare battery, spare SD card and a lens cloth - that's it!Feedback
Great photo opportunities often appear when you lest expect them, so be observant, consider how composition could be improved from a different angle (don't be lazy) or location, and always bring a camera!
