Behind The Lens

Location

I live on the Western Slope of Colorado and have got to know my local mountains and forests quite well over the last few years. One of the more famous peaks, Wetterhorn, is featured in the shot.

Time

A late fall snowstorm passed through during the afternoon, and I watched carefully for a coming break. As sunlight returned, I made my way to a good shooting location in the hope that a good shot would present itself.

Lighting

When shooting passing clouds and changing weather, I always get several shots and stay for a while. While lighting isn't under my control, part of my job is to stay for the whole show!

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 70D and a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens. I also carried another 70D with a 18-135mm lens for wider shots.

Inspiration

The interaction of a changing season and an early winter storm usually sets the scene for great (if fleeting) photographs, and I am always in search of a new perspective.

Editing

I always try to give a realistic representation of the landscape, so I keep post-processing to a minimum. I exposed the lower part of the photograph more than the sky, and used minimal dodge and burn where appropriate.

In my camera bag

I try to pack for the shoot, and since I'm usually hiking I will often use a single body and landscape zoom lens (with spares). For wildlife and people I will always pack a second body and telephoto zoom. Given the harsh environment I usually work in, I try to avoid lens changes in the field.

Feedback

If you're looking for shots like this, I would say that preparation is key. The perfect scene may only last a few seconds, so you must know both the local terrain and your equipment inside out.
