Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Alberta, at the location of an old Grist Mill. The Grist Mill was our reason for going, but we saw this old house and tree and thought we might as well take some shots.

Time

This shot was actually taken early afternoon. The model in the photo and I had gone for a bit of a trip, finding some locations to shoot at. The photo appears to be evening or night because I used the flash to overpower the scene.

Lighting

This was actually the first time I had used my new lighting set up, and this could be considered a test shot. I had just purchased an Einstein 640 and beauty dish, I remotely triggered it from my camera.

Equipment

Einstein 640, with beauty dish. My Canon 6D, and 24-70mm lens.

Inspiration

We found this scene which had a haunting feel to it for me. The model picked this dress from her extensive wardrobe, and I thought it fit well. I asked her to do a few poses. She started doing some poses that had a sad feel, we both thought it worked well.

Editing

I shoot in raw, so I did some adjustments to highlights, whites, shadows, blacks and clarity.

In my camera bag

I travel with Canon 6D and a 24-70 f/2.8 II as well as 16-35 f/2.8 II lens. I also carry a 7dmkII with 100-400 for any wildlife i might happen across. When doing portraits, I use an Einstein 640, with beauty dish.

Feedback

Use full manual mode. With a strong flash, you can overpower the sunlight and make the scene look like evening by underexposing the scene with shutterspeed, but properly exposing for the flash with a fairly wide aperture. I open the aperture to brighten the flash areas, I use a shorter shutterspeed to darken the sky and surroundings.
