Location
This photograph was taken at the Fullerton Arboretum in Southern California. It was one of the first 100 photographs of hummingbirds I have taken. This hummingbird sat there, watching me patiently and allowing me to photograph him for all of about 15 seconds and was gone.Time
This was taken towards late morning. The sun just happened to shine on his gorget just right to make the colors popLighting
It was done with natural lighting.Equipment
For this I used a Canon T3 with a 75-300 mm Canon lens with no IS. It was hand held and was taken on Auto mode as I was very very new to photography and had no idea how to use my camera. I had just gotten it recently.Inspiration
I took another photograph of a hummingbird in July and really liked it. I had gone to the Fullerton Arboretum on my second trip looking specifically for hummingbirds. I got lucky when I saw him almost immediately.Editing
No post processing done other than cropping it slightlyIn my camera bag
I now shoot with a Canon 60D and I usually have my 60d, the 75-300mm, 18-55mm and the 50mm lens in my camera bag at all times. All without image stabilizer and I never use a tripod unless I am planning to do long exposure photographs.Feedback
Patience and luck. I truly believe that this hummingbird was right there at the right time, but photographing hummingbirds (my favourite to photograph) takes a lot of patience and knowing your camera settings. Now, about 1.5 years after I shot this photograph I shoot exclusively on manual mode and I always shoot at a high shutter speed to capture movement
