Location
This was at the very top of Mount Evans. It was really interesting to watch the young goats play will the adults were very much into mineral licks so while they were eating dirt the kids were at play. I noticed this all behavior all over while I was shooting. A group of bighorn was trying to use this guys land rover as a salt lick.Time
This was early to mid afternoon.Lighting
I was kind of limited on what I could do as far as the direction the light was coming from. So I made the best of them playing.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon d500 and a nikki 200-500mm zoom lens.Inspiration
Its what I do! Its hard not to be inspired by all the cool things in our world to shoot. This trip was so full of different wildlife and landscapes. I started at an amazing wildlife refuge in Kanas called Cheyenne Bottoms, then worked my way to Colorado and just went were the photography took me. I chased some cool storms in the mesa area in southern Colorado, then over to Great Sand Dunes National park and Alamosa wildlife refuge, Then up to Mount Evens Wilderness area, and then Rock Mountain National Park. I don't know if I will go again in July but it was still just amazing.Editing
I shoot everything in raw and have kind have a general process I use for all my images. I am old school, so I only use Lightroom for file management, and Photoshop for all my editing. In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D500, D750 and 2 D7200 all with battery grips. Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II LD, Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2, Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 DI USD, Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD, Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D, Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR Lens, Nikon 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF NIKKOR. Nikkor 200-500mm Zoom. I aslo carry 8 100X150 ND filters for Landscapes. 3 carbon fiber tripods and a monopod.Feedback
Photographers can get touchy about saying they get lucky. The thing is to get outstanding wildlife shots you have to get lucky, animals don't do things on cue. So it takes a lot of time, preparation, patience and lots of time out shooting to get yourself into a situation to get lucky. Then it takes knowledge and skill to capitalize on the moments when they happen. I shot 25000 images over a month of shooting on the road and put myself into a situation that I saw some amazing things. I spent a couple of hours watching these young mountain goats do their thing and 1000's of images to get something cool.
