This was shot at the Illinois Class 2a State Semi finals. My Son is part of this team. I have been honored by being able to follow the Newman Central Catholic High School from their first practice to the end of the season. This was my sons senior year so I have been following these young men since they where little. I was able to shoot them when they won the state title. So I have been able to follow the highs and the lows for these young men. The player hugging is the biggest guy on the team and is know for his intensity. So I hope that others can see the contrast in his personality and this moment of gentle compassion for a friend.Time

I was a commercial photographer in Dallas for a lot of years most of what I used was large format camera. I still have my 4X5 even though it just collecting dust most of the time I do use it in a class I teach to show how lens look at things. I discovered that I had kind of lost my way and documentary photography is what really inspires me. So its taken a some years of trying different things equipment wise. So where I am at now is I use a Lowepro S&F SlipLock Deluxe Kit Belt & Vest with a dual sling with one fast change sense pouch. I shoot with a d7200 or d7100 I honest forget which for this shot, but have upgrade to a D500. Most shots are taken with a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 DI USD its fast and sharp, I actually replaced an 80-200 nikon with it. On the other camera has Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD, and in the pouch Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II LD. That just about covers all things. Lighting can be an issue at times but if we have a Sunny Day game I will use the Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD and park myself in end zone and can cover quite a lot of the field from there.Inspiration
I have been shooting football since I was in hight school so I have always enjoyed it. The team I follow is one of the top teams in the state of Illinois having won 5 state titles. The head coach Mike Papoccia is one of just a handful of coaches to win 300+. He has an interesting approach and focus on creating great young people and the football fall into place. Being a photographer you become an observing of the subject your shooting. Your able to watch and learn and take lessons that you can apply toward yourself. I have learned much from watching these young men and their coach's.Editing
The image was shot in raw format so there is always a process I do for working with raw images. Shooting high school football presents some big challenges specially when your following a 2A team that plays in many small towns. One year during the 2013 state title run the locker room was the team bus and a porta potty. So with this comes some really challenging lighting situations. A key to action sports is the focus and sharpness of a shot come a lot from shutter speed. So I always try to have my shutter speed set at a 1000 on shutter priority. Because stadium lights cycle and our eyes don't notice it but on manual you end up with several correctly exposed shots, and a underexposed shot because of the lighting. Shutter priority does completely solve this but makes it much better. I have had to use up to 10000 Iso for these shots so in Raw it does create a problem with noise so I have had to come up with a quick and effective way of dealing with noise. I use Macphun pug-in that does a pretty good job of dealing with high noise with out making a huge protection of the process then finish up in camera raw filter in photoshop. I am always looking for a better way of dealing with Noise. In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D500, and 2 D7200 all with battery grips. Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II LD, Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD, Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 DI USD, Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD, Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D, Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR Lens, Nikon 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF NIKKOR. I aslo care 8 100X150 ND filters for Landscapes.Feedback
I always try to remember that I am telling a story when shooting something like this. So I just don't focus on the action but also the other things that happen on the field. One of the biggest mistakes I see with other photographers that really come back to bite you in sports is looking at your LCD of what you just shot. While your looking last shot your missing the next great shot. You got the shot or you didn't and looking at it then isn't going to change that because the moment has passed. I will check exposure now and again but not much. This can cause you to miss so much, I have got some great shots when the photographers around me al looking at the back of their camera's
