Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot near the entrance to the Badlands I have been going to the Badlands for nearly 20 years and the weather never cooperated. The Bad lands really needs some clouds to make it look a little more that just dirt and sky, and there where storms in the area that day. So I stopped at a road side area and there was a prairie dog town and the prairie dogs could care less I was there. So they did what they do and where playing around.

Time

Early afternoon

Lighting

Nothing really, natural light with the weather starting to turn

Equipment

I shot this a while back, So it was with my Nikon D7100

Inspiration

I married a girl from South Dakota. So I spend a lot of time there. South Dakota is an easy place to be inspired in.

Editing

Nothing special really. I have kind of a process for editing raw images in photoshop. I use Lightroom for file management, I know it does more but I guess I am a creature of habit and use photoshop because its what I am used too. I usually will shadows and highlights and sharpness and noise. This one I didn't have to play with much.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D500, and 2 D7200 all with battery grips. Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II LD, Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD, Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 DI USD, Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD, Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D, Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR Lens, Nikon 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF NIKKOR. I aslo care 8 100X150 ND filters for Landscapes.

Feedback

Get out and shoot! The only way your going to get great wild life shots is to go after them. I work the same area that I have seen animals some days I see a lot some days I don't see anything. The key is to put your self into situation to get the shot. Its also has been kind of a cause of mine lately. I teach a course and I am absolutely shocked by how many people don't know the basics of photography. They labor under the misconception that cameras and better cameras make the photographer. Its knowing what your shutter speed and aperture do and what a knowledge of how they work will do wonders for your photography. Photography is an art form, and a knowledge of composition and how people look at photography is a must. We live in a world saturated in photo's. What we need to come up with is a way to get people to stop and take a longer look.
