Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Fort Chadbourne, an 1850's frontier fort in Texas

Time

It would have been late afternoon on a winter day

Lighting

The sun was a good bit through it's journey for the day in a cloudless sky, so I tried to push the aperture as hard as I could to get the starburst over the roof of the old officer's quarters

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 5D mkIII and 16-35mm F2.8L lens

Inspiration

I love this old fort and have visited it several times now

Editing

in addition to conversion to monochrome a bit of light and texture work was done in LightRoom

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Canon 80D (I finally wore out the shutter in my trusty 70D) with a Tamron 16/300mm mounted, and a 5D Mk III with any number of lenses, ranging from a 8mm diagonal fisheye to a Sigma 200-500mm telephoto depending on what I'll be shooting. I'm usually looking for cool things at random while traveling, so I often don't plan shots beforehand - I'm a pretty impromptu/opportunistic photographer. I've found I spend the most time with various prime lenses and the 16-300mm Tamron though, the Tamron's range lets you capture almost anything on the fly and reduces the need for lens changes out in the open

Feedback

Try playing with different aperture settings, there are some interesting effects you can use in place of interesting skies - the sunburst effect here wasn't Photoshopped in later, it was part of the original shot. Just use a very narrow aperure - f18 on a wide angle works best for APS-C cameras, you can push it to F22 on a full-frame without too much loss of clarity (due to refraction through the small opening). You can get the same effect from any bright light at night, but you'll need a tripod as it will be a long exposure.
