Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Lower Antelope Canyon, near Page, Arizona.

Time

This photo was taken in the afternoon in October at about 2:30 pm.

Lighting

I prefer to take photos during the fall or winter at this location because the sun is lower in the sky in the afternoon and there is less chance of direct sunlight blowing out parts of the shot. The range of light is fairly extreme and varies widely from the bottom of the slot canyon to the top with the sky being the brightest area.

Equipment

At that time I was using a Nikon D7200 camera with a Nikon 10-24mm wide angle lens with tripod.

Inspiration

I had visited the Antelope Canyon once before with a friend and decided that I would like to try getting more out of my shots by doing HDR photography.

Editing

Because this slot canyon has such widely varying extremes of light this is an HDR shot created from 7 shots taken at varying exposures so that the darkest and brightest areas of the shot will be visible in the final merged photo.

In my camera bag

At that time I had a Nikon D7200 but now have upgraded to the Nikon D850 (which I highly recommend). I now use the Nikon 500mm PF lens (sometimes with a Nikon 1.4 teleconverter) most of the time as I am mostly doing wildlife photography. For landscapes I have a Nikon AF-S FX Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED wide angle lens. When using my tripod I like to use a wired remote to avoid movement when taking shots.

Feedback

It's a shame that photographers are no longer allowed in the slots with their tripods and there are no more photography tours. Photographers made the slots famous and now they are in the way because the canyons have become so popular. This kind of shot can only be taken using a tripod and doing HDR photography.
