Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at Lower Antelope Canyon
Time
When I arrived at the slots I was quite disappointed to learn that I would have to wait for a photo tour leaving at 2:20 pm as I had been hoping for something around noon to get more light. But as it turned out, when you are taking shots that include the sky, the light is better in the later afternoon as there are fewer spots with harsh, direct sunlight. This shot was taken about 3 pm.
Lighting
Patches of direct sunlight tend to blow out that area of the shot and are best avoided. Shooting shots that include the top of the slots is best done later in the day and in late fall or winter.
Equipment
I used a Nikon D7200, a Nikon 10-24 wide angle lens and of course a tripod since I was doing HDR
Inspiration
I had been to the slots before and taken some shots that I like but this time I wanted to try getting the sky into the photos and so I tried HDR. I was lucky enough to get some cloud in the sky which added some welcome detail.
Editing
I did 9 bracket HDR which seems to be necessary to get everything into the photos, as well as some sharpening and adjusting saturation.
In my camera bag
I've been slowly collecting lenses and usually try to bring my Nikon 10-24 wide angle, 105 mm macro, and 55-300 mm My 600 mm is too heavy to lug around so it's saved for specific shots.
Feedback
For inside shots that don't include the sky it might be better to go near noon for maximum light but even then harsh direct sun on the rock can spoil some shots. I prefer later in the day and in late fall.
