Location
This shot was taken at a butterfly zoo in Rhode Island, USA. Common Crows are not native to RI and I was fortunate to be able to see them.Time
Shot mid-day on a sunny afternoon in July.Lighting
The bright sun wasn't a factor as the butterflies were in a screened enclosure. The lighting is all natural.Equipment
I handheld my Canon Rebel, EF 100mm f2.8 macro.Inspiration
Truthfully, Viewbug. When I joined VB in 2012 I knew nothing about photography. I studied thousands of photos on the site and fell in love with photography in general and, more specifically, taking photos of butterflies. This butterfly picture was taken on my first photo shoot using a macro lens for the very first time! I was so excited!Editing
I do very little post-processing other than the basics. I'm self-taught on Lightroom. In my camera bag
I have 3 bodies - a Canon Rebel t3i and two t5i so that I don't have to keep changing lenses. Two are often attached to my Black Rapid dual strap which I find very useful. I have four lenses: 10-18mm, 17-55mm, 70-300, and my macro. I have a meFOTO tripod in my trunk. I occasionally use polarizing lenses.Feedback
When taking photos of butterflies in a zoo or garden, try to visit on a day that's not too sunny because they tend to sit still longer when it's cloudy. It also helps to be patient! I have no training in photography and have only been doing it as a hobby for a few years so everything is done by trial and error (with lots of errors but that's okay!). I don't have the advice a pro could give you so I would simply say not to be afraid to try new things.
