Location
I took this photo at on a hot August day in Rhode Island.Time
This was shot mid-afternoon.Lighting
It was a bright summer day around 2PM but I was fortunate enough to not have the bright sun blow out the exposure.Equipment
I had purchased a new macro lens the day before taking this photo. I had never used a macro before and was very excited to be using it for the first time and to be using it on this beautiful butterfly! The lens was on my Canon Rebel t3i. Hand held, no flash.Inspiration
Butterflies are my favorite subject to shoot. I love to see the different patterns and colors on these delicate creatures and to watch them flit around. I enjoy going to butterfly zoos or gardens whenever I get a chance to visit one.Editing
I raised the exposure, contrast, shadows, and whites, just a very tiny bit, and lowered the highlights a little bit, also.In my camera bag
I now have 3 camera bodies - a Canon Rebels t3i and two t5i so that I don't have to keep changing lenses. Two are attached to my Black Rapid dual strap which I find very useful. I have 4 lenses - 10- 18mm, 17-55mm, 70-300mm, and my macro. I have a MeFOTO tripod in my trunk. I occasionally use polarizing lenses.Feedback
When taking photos of butterflies in a zoo or garden, try to visit on a day that's not too sunny because butterflies tend to sit still longer when it's cloudy. It also helps to be patient! I have no training in photography and have only been doing it as a hobby for 4 years so everything is done by trial and error (with lots of errors, but that's okay!) I don't have the advice a pro could give you so I would simply say to not be afraid to try new things.
