Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in the Qu' Appelle Valley, outside of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. It was taken on an unusually warm fall day.

Time

This photo was actually taken at different times of the day. I actually judged the location of the sunset incorrectly. I set my camera up about a half hour before sunset and took a picture, then as the sun went down, I snapped different photos into the blue hour or the evening. Lastly when it was quite dark, I had my buddy run into the church with an off camera flash and I took a picture with a flash in each window. It was completely dark by the time we left the church.

Lighting

This photo captures different parts of the sunset, the foreground is taken with the most amount of light, the sky later in blue hour, and the lights in the church later at night. The pictures were all masked together in Photoshop.

Equipment

A tripod, Nikon D7100, and a Sigma 18-250mm lens. As I mentioned earlier I also used an off camera flash for inside the church as their is no electricity out there.

Inspiration

I saw the church on a friend's post on Facebook. I realized that it wasn't that far away and I had nothing to do on a Saturday night. I believe I got the idea from a Youtube tutorial. I like to watch videos from SLR Lounge, CreativeLive, and FStoppers as well as a number of other great websites.

Editing

I have 4 pictures with different exposures all placed in layers onto of each other. I used layer masks to bring the church and foreground with good light, then I add the sky, and finally the flashes of light in the window. Once you understand layers, it is all pretty easy.

In my camera bag

Currently I have a Nikon D7100 for my body and I own four lenses: 35mm, 50mm, 10-20mm and an 18-200mm. I have a Metz off camera flash, but don't use it a lot as I am still learning. I usually bring a tripod along and have a couple of neutral density and polarizing filters.

Feedback

Learn Photoshop and know how to use layers and layer masks. After that, or during that time go out and set up a camera and snap a bunch of pictures at different times of the evening. Later you will be able to see how the light changes, and what light goes together to make a nice picture. In all honesty, I got lucky on this picture, it turned out nicer than I thought.
