Behind The Lens
Location
This picture was taken on China Beach, Vancouver Island, Canada. It is a pretty accessible beach, just a short hike down from the parking lot, and there is the ocean.Time
The kids were pretty excited to swim in the ocean, so we planned our trip to hit the beach right around noon. Luckily it was warm out even if the water wasn't.Lighting
This was one of those shots where I just lucked out with bright sunlight. There wasn't much I could do as we didn't have any shade protecting us, I shot with what the sun gave me.Equipment
I used a simple Nikon D7100 for this shot with a quick shutter speed.Inspiration
I was lucky enough to travel at the same time my sister and her family were on vacation. I was like their own personal photographer, everywhere we went, I took pictures. These three children are my niece and nephews so the are used to me being around them with the camera. It was an unbelievable experience to witness and capture a lot of firsts through the lens. This was the first time the kids had been to the ocean, so to be able to capture some of their joy was a great experience. They had about three beach races; the little guy cheated quite a bit.Editing
A little bit of sharpening of the colors in Lightroom, and some cropping. In my camera bag
Currently I have a Nikon D7100 for my body and I own three lenses: 35mm, 50mm, and an 18-200mm. I have a Metz off camera flash, but don't use it a lot as I am still learning. I usually bring a tripod along and have a couple of neutral density and polarizing filters.Feedback
The simplest advice that I have is to try and shoot people when they aren't looking. Because this is my family, they are comfortable with me and a camera. I shoot them all the time so they don't pay attention to me and I am able to get a more authentic picture. For this picture, a fast shutter speed, continuous shooting mode, and a little luck.
