Behind The Lens

Location

Sitting in my reading chair one evening, our agoraphobic cat jumped in my lap and began watching my eReader as if I was danging a mouse in front of her. When I turned the pages, she pawed at it. When I didn't turn pages, she pawed at me. The only thing I had nearby to catch the shot of her adoring my reader was was my iPhone.

Time

This was early evening but since there are black-out curtains in my bedroom and the only other light in the room came from a small television, I pretty much got to rely on the light from my eReader.

Lighting

I am really not very good at taking indoor shots - I'm more of a wildlife gal - but I can only take minimal credit for the light in this shot anyway. It is what iPhone decided it would be when I turned off the flash.

Equipment

iPhone. Ta Da!

Inspiration

Cat. Lap. Light from reader.

Editing

I wanted to clean it up in Lightroom but the shot was just not clean enough.

In my camera bag

I pretty much keep my Canon 7D Mark !! and Rebel T3 on me wherever I go. I've got a good size Tamron lens for birding but there was no bag nearby for this shot. It was a shot of happenstance. I don't believe good photography always requires expensive equipment. Oh, sure, it helps. No doubt. But a creative eye can often make the bigger difference.

Feedback

Some of my best shots have not been planned. This is contrary to the way photographers are programmed to plan and schedule and plan some more. And I agree that the most glorious shots I've seen were usually excruciatingly mapped and planned. But now and then, a child climbs up in a window or a pet does something unusual and you can only use what you have. So, I'd suggest keeping your batteries charged and extra memory cards in your bag and keep that bag with you at all times. Running to the grocery store? Make sure that bag is in your car. But if a red-tailed hawk lands on your bathroom window while you're in the tub? Well, use whatever you can reach!
