Location
San José Island is a barrier island on the Gulf Coast of Texas near Port Aransas. The island is about as deserted as an island can be and, at 21 miles long (and only 5 miles wide), San Jose allows for plenty of unobstructed photography of nature. I went looking for birds but fell in love with the little ghost crabs.Time
We took a jetty boat to the island first thing in the morning and walked the beach until well into the afternoon. I got both morning and afternoon lit shots that way.Lighting
Clouds had rolled in so this particular shot was in between brief showers. The light was not ideal but the sand reflected what light I had and gave the whole shot a kind of ethereal look.Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 7D mark II and my Tamron 600 mm lens. It required a lot of belly crawling in the wet sand.Inspiration
Look at that funny thing! Who wouldn't want to capture it? One of the crabs was dragging around an egg sack or something which made it look like the crab was walking a pet rock on a leash!Editing
I put this photo in Lightroom but I'm so unskilled that I really didn't accomplish much. I would have liked to brighten it but, as always, I was afraid of over-processing so left it pretty much as shot.In my camera bag
Everything I have. I take an extra camera (Canon t3 or t6) and every lens. I never know when I may stumble on a great shot and too many times, I didn't have the right lens.Feedback
Shoot, shoot, shoot. Even if the majority of your shots are terrible. The only way to learn is to keep shooting and you never know when (1) you may have a happy accident or (2) realize your skills have improved dramatically.
