My son's wedding was held at a historic downtown Dallas building at 400 North Ervay. The courtroom where this photo was taken is famous for the 1935 Harboring Trial of Bonnie & Clyde. You can find photos online of the Harboring Trial that show this very window.Time
This was late afternoon so the light reflecting off the antique wood paneling was unique and hauntingly beautiful. You could feel the history in the room.Lighting
Our little flower girl was watching for trains out the the window. I can take no credit for her beautiful silhouette. That was all afternoon sun reflecting from the building across the street and mimicking sunset.Equipment
I didn't have my tripod and since the photo was impromptu, I propped my camera on a chair. I shot this with my Canon 7D mark I I and since I had to decide quickly about the setting, I took several shots, adjusting my settings in between each. I think I got five or six photos before our little flower girl moved but this is the only one that did justice to the light.Inspiration
I was utterly enchanted by the history of this room and did not actually plan to take photos myself, being mother of the groom. But when everyone was decorating, the flower girl got bored and the shot was too beautiful to pass up.Editing
This is a goal of mine. I am woefully inept at post processing. I experiment with it and vow to learn more. I do have Lightroom but other than adjusting exposure and cropping, I really don't know how to use it. However, there are some great tutorials on YouTube and I'm determined to learn. Last year, Adobe offered a free version of Photoshop and while I've downloaded it, the first time I opened it, I was so overwhelmed that I've never looked at it again. Many many years ago, I had some very simple programs that did some fun post stuff but they don't work on current windows operating systems. In my camera bag
My 7D goes everywhere with me. But if I am specifically out to shoot, I take my monopod and Tamron 600mm lens.Feedback
My learning curve is such that the best advice I can give anyone is to keep shooting. Digital is free so if you take 500 terrible shots and get five good ones, that's a win in my book.
