It would be interesting to see the same picture taken with a ND 6 filter. Wonderful colours and the swans just add a peaceful feeling to the scene. Gorgeous!

Location
I took this photo on the side of a highway around Derby, Connecticut. I had actually spent the day chasing waterfalls and foliage upstate, but on my way home I saw this beautiful overlook off the side of the road. I knew immediately I needed to pull over, and that I was looking at something special.Time
This photo was taken in the late afternoon in early November, around 4:30pm. Fate was on my side that day; after spending the entire morning and afternoon hiking I was lucky to have passed this location when I did. The sun sets very early during the latter months of the year, so if I had driven by just 20-30 minutes later it may have been too dark for me to even notice this scene. It just goes to show how much a nature photographer's success depends on timing and luck.Lighting
The great thing about landscape photos is that something amazing can be taken with almost any lighting - if you know what you're doing. It was a gray, overcast day so I decided to remove that ugly bright sky from the equation by having the foliage and reflection fill the entire photo. As a nature photographer I'm constantly at the mercy of the elements, so I needed to learn to adapt to the conditions placed before me.Equipment
I had a Canon Rebel SL1, which is what I pulled out to snap this shot. I had an 18-55mm EF-S lens on the body but besides that no other equipment was used.Inspiration
While it was really a spur of the moment photo shoot, I was instantly amazed by the bright reds, oranges, and yellows that dominated the forest. I was fascinated by how this scene emulated everything I loved about New England: the calm bodies of water, the beautiful seaside towns, and the incredible autumn colors. I knew as soon as I looked out the window that I would forever regret not taking this photo if I drove by.Editing
I always do at least a small amount of post-processing to my photos, as the camera can rarely capture just how breathtaking the nature I photograph can be. For this photo, I bumped up the saturation a bit in order to bring out the colors and added a high-pass filter to sharpen the image. Finally, I tinkered with the brightness and contrast until I had the natural but eye-popping look I was searching for.In my camera bag
I like to carry relatively lightly, as I often have to trek to the locations I photograph. I typically bring my Canon 6D camera body, along with a few lenses: a 12-24mm wide angle, a fixed 50mm 1.2, and a Sigma telephoto 70-300mm. Having multiple lenses allows me to shoot a variety of nature scenes from sweeping landscapes to close-ups of wildlife. A tripod is a must; I always carry one with me in case I stumble upon moving water or a long-exposure opportunity. In addition, I carry a variety of filters to use for different scenes. My favorites include a few neutral density filters for long exposures and a polarizer for general nature shots. Finally, I make sure to carry a couple extra batteries. You never want to run out of camera life! This may sound like a lot, but believe it or not it all fits into the Canon backpack I hike with.Feedback
A few pieces of advice: first, be prepared for anything. I had no idea when I left my house that morning that I would stumble upon what would become my most popular photo ever (by quite a lot). But I prepped for the possibility by bringing a variety of gear and shooting everything that caught my eye. It's always better to come over prepared than under prepared. As for the photo itself, I'll go back to something I alluded to previously - adapting to light conditions. As most of you have realized, the ability to manipulate light is the trademark of a good photographer. Don't be discouraged by gray days or even rain, as any scene can be transformed into a masterpiece with the right touch. And finally, don't be afraid to post-process your photos. When I first started photographing I refused to edit my photos more than the bare minimum, scared that the more I post-processed the less skillful of a photographer I was. That wasn't true. Photos as they come straight from the camera are rough drafts, and Photoshop edits are the revisions. The less you have to revise the better, but post-processing allows you to apply your own unique style to your photos, while overcoming the limits of your camera. I hope this helped, and good luck to all my fellow photographers on their next photo adventure!
