Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in beautiful Banff National Park, Lake Louise September 2, 2013.

Time

We got up early due to the 45 minute drive from our campsite in Banff National Park to Lake Louise. This was an ideal time of the year since the tourism was not at its peak, and I was at this location before 8 am and able to avoid the peak times of the day which is between 10 am to 4 pm. I wanted to avoid getting crowds in my photo or not having a spot to set up my equipment.

Lighting

I wanted to get the sunrise on the peaks but was a little too late for that. I did notice that due to the time of morning it was better lighting, avoiding some dark shadows on the left side of the image.

Equipment

I like to keep my ISO low to avoid as much noise as possible. I used a Nikon D800 on a Manfrotto tripod. My lens is a Nikon 16-35 mm f/4 G with a circular polarizer attached. Focal length: 16 mm, ISO: 100, f/11, shutter speed: 1/10s in Manual Mode

Inspiration

The beautiful majestic and grandeur of the Rocky Mountains always inspires me! I may only be there for a short while but this image takes me back every time.

Editing

I start with camera raw to correct lens distortion, then in Photoshop I brought up the shadows slightly on the left side of the image, lastly I watermark and save as a jpeg.

In my camera bag

My go to gear is: Nikon D800 body. Lenses: Nikon 50 mm f/1.4D, Nikon 16-35 mm f/4 G and Sigma 150-500 mm f/5-6.3. Manfrotto tripod. A piece of memory foam that I keep in my vehicle just for the occasions of wildlife along the roadways that I put on the door to steady my camera and long lens.

Feedback

I think the key to any good image is to research the subject matter. Sometimes apps are very helpful such as The Photographer's Ephemeris to help you know where to set up your equipment and what light is going to fall on your subject at what time of the day.
