I had the pleasure to photograph my best friends daughter's senior portraits. I could have never imagined 20 years ago that I would be taking his daughters senior portraits. I had a great time working with her! She's such a beautiful person inside and out. She will be going to nursing school after she graduates.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo just outside of Paris, IL.

Time

It was about an hour before sunset.

Lighting

I only use natural light.

Equipment

A Canon 5D Mark III and a 135 2.0 Canon lens.

Inspiration

This was taken as part of a high school senior portrait session and since it was fall and we had a lot of leaves I thought this would make for a perfect photo opportunity.

Editing

I used Lightroom & Photoshop to edit in post.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a Canon 5D Mark III, a 135mm 2.0, a 50mm 1.4, and an 85mm 1.8 canon lens. I also use a monopod and a reflector occasionally.

Feedback

The best advise I could give an aspiring photographer is to not worry about buying the best camera body you can get and get the best glass(lens) you can afford for you existing DSLR. A wider aperture will allow more light and you'll be able to achieve that dreamy bokeh'd background. Then constantly practice editing your portraits in post. I've seen several photos where the photographer captured a great photograph and ruined it because they don't understand how to edit they're work in post. There are endless ways to learn. Trial and error, purchase a video tutorial, take a class, or work one on one with someone. Yes these ideas can be expensive but they will be worth the money and time you put in learning the skill of portrait editing. Good luck to everyone who reads this! Just keep at it all and you will get better!
