Location
This photo was taken about 5 miles from Coeur d'alene, Idaho on what is called the "Rathdrum prairie". It's about 40 miles east of Spokane, WA. These railroad tracks carry huge freight trains daily from Seattle across the midwest to Chicago.Time
It was about 11 am as I recall.Lighting
It was just natural light on a nice day in north Idaho.Equipment
I used a Sony Nex-6 with a 17-55mm lens. Handheld. No filters.Inspiration
This is actually one of my favorite spots. I have been back many times in different seasons. Often a train will be coming through or even stopped about 100 yards down the tracks. The vastness and straight lines of the tracks are a visual delight and it's never the same there.Editing
I only use the basic sliders in iphoto for post-processing. The Sony Nex-6 has a built in HDR which I use regularly. In my camera bag
I carry a should bag with a Sony Nex-6 (a very light weight camera). Have have 4 lenses: 17-55mm, 50-200, 14mm, and fish-eye. I carry a bean bag and a tripod, but rarely use the tripod. I always carry 2 extra batteries and one extra memory card. On two occasions I actually went out and shot for hours with NO MEMORY CARD in the camera! It was a huge lesson!Feedback
I think this particular sight/site is appealing because of the vast nothingness around the tracks. Actually in 3 directions, there are farmhouses, cars, farm equipment, etc. all around, but this view does not show that. I like to get out on the tracks and actually face straight down the rails. I also like to get very low. Every time I cross railroad tracks I look to both sides to assess whether I think it would be a good photo!
