Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Armstrong Redwoods located just off of Highway 101 in Sonoma County, California, about 60 miles north of San Francisco.

Time

I believe it was about 2 pm.

Lighting

This grove of huge redwood trees is very dense. It was just a sunny, California day in mid-afternoon.

Equipment

I used a Sony a6000 with a fish eye lens, handheld, for this photo.

Inspiration

This grove of trees is quite spectacular in its grandeur. The trees are enormous in girth as well as height. There are pathways to walk around with just slight, very low fencing to keep people back from some areas. I spent about 2 hours in the grove wandering around, in and out of very dense areas. I was fortunate on this shot that the trees were so symmetrically placed and growing so gloriously.

Editing

I did very minimal post-processing on this shot. I just used a few of the slider in iphotos.

In my camera bag

I carry two Sonys, an a6000 and a Nex-6. One has a 17-50mm lens and the other a 50-200mm lens so I don't have to switch out my lens. I carry two other lens, a fish eye and a 14mm, which I seldom use. I have some cleaning equipment and extra batteries. I sometimes have a tripod but usually have a difficult time it. I tend to move around a lot and don't take many photos of static scenes. I really not much of a gear person.

Feedback

To capture a scene like this, you do have to have the raw material available....that is, the gorgeous trees! But specifically, standing in the middle of any grove of trees at least 30 feet tall, pointing your camera straight up, usually will yield startlingly beautiful images. I hold the camera waist level and point straight up.
