No question the subject matter of this image is moving and poignant, I'm just not sure about the distressed look however. To me, it looks like a cheap filter that can be downloaded for free and layered over top of the image in a quick and dirty fashion. Not meaning to insult just my critique The folded flag as well as the boots ar the prominent features as they represent the loss. I find the scratches in the image too much of a distraction

This photo is by far the best without question.
It's wrong that you did not win.
I did not serve however you are the winner in my book. The silent statements made in your photo trumps all others.
Very well done!!!!

Location
I took this photo at the local park in Hayden, Idaho.Time
Midday.Lighting
Nothing special. It was just natural daylight.Equipment
Sony Nex-6 with a 17-55mm lens. Nothing else.Inspiration
The event was a traveling Viet Nam Memorial and that was in town for a couple days. The crowds of people that attended were a photographer's dream. This exhibit was in a plexiglas case out on the lawn. It was a poignant scene with the worn boots.Editing
I just used the sliders in iphoto to sharpen as much as possible. There is an in-camera HDR which I used when I took the photo. In my camera bag
Sony Nex-6, 17-55mm, 14mm, 50-200mm and fish-eye lens. I always carry extra batteries and memory cards. I have recently acquired a bean bag I used for stability!Feedback
Take LOTS of photos at events where many people are milling around. They pay very little attention to you, and you can get wonderful shots of the people. Get in close to the subjects. Don't stand back and try to get the whole scene.
