Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my backyard at home. I am still an amateur photographer, but I find that with every photo I take, I learn new skills in the process.

Time

This photo was taken about 7 am in the morning, during our Winter. It was frosty the morning I took this photo, with frost everywhere. So, the yard was blanketed with a layer of icy dew. I was fascinated by the way the frost had coated the blood-red rose and had to capture the moment before the frosts melted.

Lighting

Being the early morning, the sun hadn't risen. The sky was slightly overcast, which created the perfect lighting for the photograph.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D3400, with a 70 - 300mm tele-zoom lens. This also happens to be my favourite lens when I'm out taking photos, as it allows me to take photos of subjects in the distance. I do have other equipment in my other camera bag, but prefer to travel light as it's more advantageous.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the way the frosty dew looked on the rose petals, giving it a sugary appearance.

Editing

In both of my rose photos, I used a preset in lightroom to give it a dark look, and enhance the colours. I also did some minor tweaks with the brightness, so that it wasn't overly bright, but still maintained its magically dark appearance.

In my camera bag

I mainly carry my Nikon D3400, 18 - 55mm kit lens and my 70 - 300mm tele-zoom lens. But I tend to have the 70 - 300mm lens on my camera most times when I'm out taking photos, as it allows me to take photos from a distance, (as I mainly take photos of the wildlife and livestock that I come across). I do have other equipment, like a tripod and filters, but I prefer to leave them at home. Carrying less equipment works better for me.

Feedback

You don't have to look very far to take interesting photos, as our surroundings offer a variety of subjects. You just have to look to find it! Take advantage of the time of day, you take your photos and the things that create great photos. Work on your composition, so that you capture the subject perfectly. And most importantly...just have fun!
