Location
This photo was taken at the 47th Parallel, about 30km east of Lynn Lake, Manitoba, Canada. The temperature at the time was -40 degrees Celsius.Time
The photo was taken mid day, about 12:05 pm, on Christmas Day, 2014.Lighting
The light was very intense. At these temperatures (-40 degrees celsius), there are no clouds. The skies were intense blue, so the lighting was an ideal blue light.Equipment
I used a Canon 5d Mark 3, with an EF 24-105. The shot was achieved using f8.0 at 1/250 sec, with an ISO of 400. Hand held, with no filters.Inspiration
My wife and I wanted to get out of doors and enjoy Christmas Day. We dressed in our parkas and drove 30 km away from the community. We were truly in the wilderness. Not a person for miles.Editing
My workflow for this photo involved Lightroom 4.2 and Photoshop 6.0. To bring out the textures I used Photomatix Pro.In my camera bag
Normally I carry a Canon 5D Mark 3 and a 50D. Both With battery packs. Lens include a EF 24-105, L series, a EF 16-36, L series, a EF 70-200, L series, a EF 100-400, L series. I also carry Lee ND filters, an Manfroto tripod and a Sirui K40X ball head.Feedback
In the north you need to be warm, so the more layers the better. Carry extra batteries for your camera. Keep your camera close to your body when not being used. Keep your ND filters ready for other phonema such as Sun Dogs and the Aurora. The north is an amazing place to visit. Don't worry about the temperature, remember, there is no humidity. Take in the experience once in your life (put in on your bucket list), you will not regret it, believe me.
