I love how this image has such a classic look. Has National Geo seen this? Beautiful image. This Heron does his species proud.

Great shot. I have many pics of the great blue, but this is a remarkably skilled rendition!!

Location
This photo was taken at the Venice Rookery in Venice Florida.Time
Early Morning around 7am.Lighting
This Great Blue Heron just had beautiful light and it was like he was posing for me. It was the right time of day for this shot because of how the light was just beginning to show the habitat.Equipment
At this time I was still shooting with my Canon 10D, a Canon 600mm ISL lens, tripod, cable release and no filter.Inspiration
This entire setting was in my opinion just perfect and I've never seen a more perfect Great Blue Heron. It was a matter of being at the right place at the right time with just the right subject.Editing
No post processing on this image other than cropping. In my camera bag
I carry all Canon Equipment. Now days I carry a 5D, 50D, 100-400 ISL,17-40 L, 50mm 1.4, 28-135 IS, 430EX and 530EX flash, cable release, circular polarizing filters, and a set of defusers. I also carry a Bogen Wilderness Tripod or a Bogen Monopod on all outings.Feedback
In my opinion this type of shot requires patience to find the right habit and the right setting for your subject. Wildlife shooting takes patience, luck and study to get the shot you want. In this case I also paid attention to the depth of field which can be critical to the results.
