Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on route to Havana in Cuba. It is called the Bacunayagua Bridge and it is the tallest in Cuba. I was there at the end of one summer celebrating the wedding of a family member and we were out on a day excursion off of the resort.

Time

This was around 1 pm if I recall correctly. My family and I took a pause at a rest stop on the way to Havana.

Lighting

This was natural lighting just after mid-day. I believe I had a circular polarization filter on.

Equipment

This was taken with my old Canon XSi and the 18-55 kit lens, proving once again for me that it's not the camera, it's the composition and what it invokes in the viewer. The camera was steadied on a railing without a tripod.

Inspiration

It was amazing to see this bridge appear out of the bush the way it did. What a contrast of nature and man!

Editing

This was shot in colour originally in raw. I did some minor work in PSPX8 if I recall correctly.

In my camera bag

This was taken with my old Rebel XSi, however nowadays I carry a Canon 70D, Tamron 18-270 as my walk-around lens. I also carry a Sigma 10-20 F/3.5 DC HSM, a Canon EF 50 1.8 STM, various Tiffen UV/haze filters, Kenko Pro1 ND's, Cameron CPF's. I have a TriggerTrap cable to experiment with for long exposures etc. A Metz 44 AF-1 flash unit rounds out my bag.

Feedback

Sometimes capturing a great photo can be had with what you have on hand. Be it a cellphone or an old hand me down, and so far my best photos seem to be the ones where I shot with what I had and didn't miss out on a wonderful opportunity. Learn from the photos you see here on ViewBug and understand why you like them. It's the fundamentals of composition that are tried and true, and once you nail the formula, success begins to happen. I credit the entire ViewBug community for my inspiration and growth in my photography skills.
