Location
Lake Wanaka, New Zealand South IslandTime
Early morning before sunriseLighting
The lighting and mood of the image comes from low lying winter cloud and mist. Creating a soft light and seperate on from the mountains in the back groundEquipment
Manfrotto tripod, Canon 6D, 70-200mm f/2.8, Lee filterInspiration
Inspiration for this shoot originally came from the many other photographers who have shot the famous Wanaka Tree. On my arrival at the location, the amazing beauty and magical feel was so inspiring I didn't want to leaveEditing
Just the basics plus conversion to black and white. Also bought a bit of detail out lifting shadows in the tree trunkIn my camera bag
Canon 6D and Canon 5Ds along with Canon lenses 16-35mm 20-70mm 70-200mm 180mm 100mm 50mm. Lee filter kits.Feedback
Be patient and persistent. The day before was windy and disappointing. The difference the next morning in the conditions was incredible. You never know with landscape photography when you will get lucky with what Mother Nature presents you. Be early, a location as popular as this will be busy with other photographers. Try and get there early to ensure you get the best angle. Look for different perspectives from all of the usual ways you have seen the location shot and create unique images.
