This was on my bucket list of locations to shoot. It was my birthday so I took a road trip to spend the day with a friend and our cameras. I had looked at hundreds of shots of Nature's Window and tried to pre-visualise a different perspective. Thinking the sun would rise through the window that was the shot I headed there to get. Upon arriving early I realised that the angle of the sunrise was wrong, so re-evaluated the scene and decided to step back for a wider shot which would still include the sun. Lucky for me I did and captured the magical sunburst on the edge of the rock.Editing
Yes a little post processing was done as I shoot in RAW. Firstly I Lightened the shadows in front of the Window using LR 5. Increased contrast, clarity and vibrancy. Increased the red slider a touch to bring out the colour in the rock. Opened in PS 6, creating an adjustment layer to increase the saturation of the greens in the trees and other detail looking through the Window. This helped to give it more depth. Added a vignette in LR to help the eye be drawn to the looking through and at the Window.In my camera bag
Canon 6D. All lenses are Canon also. They are 50mm 1.4 | 100m 2.8 | 16-35mm 2.8 | 24-70mm 2.8 |70-200mm 2.8 | 24-105mm F4. Lens hoods although I don't use them often due to using filters and mostly shooting in the golden hours. Lee Filter Kit including adapter ring, ND .6 Hard grad filter, ND .6 filter, Lee Big Stopper. Spare Battery and cards. Cleaning cloth and spray. Torch and head lamp.Feedback
The magical part of this image is the sunburst. Arrive early to check out the angle of the sunrise. About and hour before sunrise is best.... you may need a torch. The light is beautiful and you can take other shots while waiting for the sun to come up. Setup using a sturdy tripod. The correct lens helps to achieve the sunburst/starburst effect. Canon 16-35mm lens is known to create a nice, clean, pleasing sunburst effect. It is related to the number of blades in the lens. Use a polarising filter on your lens. Set your aperture small F16 - F22. Personally I use F22. I always shoot with Live View & 2 second timer to prevent camera shake. Another useful tip is to set up your camera before-hand to bracket. I have mine set for 5 exposures. The correct exposure, 1 stop over and under, 2 stops over and under. Giving me a total of 5 exposures. This way you have the option to merge for HDR if required or can process the best single image from your shoot. Expose for the brightest part of the sky... in this case the sun. Keep shooting and wait for the magic to be captured!! Often you can't tell which image will look the best until you upload into LR. Aim to capture the sun on the edge of the rock, or through branches of a tree, on the edge of a mountain. Beautiful landscapes sometimes mean going back and re-shooting so if you don't get it right the first time around, always go back and keep trying!
