Behind The Lens

Location

While on a trip to New Zealand we spent some time in Rotorua. It was surprising to see the seagulls nesting on the ground at the edge of the lake. I do wonder if perhaps the ground there was warm due to the thermals in the area.

Time

This was mid afternoon - nap time for mum.

Lighting

It was a beautiful clear summer day with no need for artificial light.

Equipment

This was my first trip using my Canon 600d with the standard 55-200mm kit lens. This shit shows how kit lenses are drastically under rated. ISO was 400 f stop 10.

Inspiration

I was amazed how tolerant the gulls were of our presence. Mind you - we made a point of not getting close. But mum looked so content with her chick nestled next to her.

Editing

This was a standard jpeg editing session. A little bit if cropping and sharpness.

In my camera bag

Over time I have changed what I carry in my bag. But the standard camera, lens cleaner, spare battery, spare memory card, this time I only had my kit lenses with me.

Feedback

Rotorua is a very interesting area. Massive amounts of bird life - I think because of the thermal zone it is a favourite of the birds for nesting.
