The firey sun provides this planet with life through its abundance of heat and light. Passing over the sky it provides this resource to all life on the surface of the earth. As this source of life completes its daily journey across our skies, providing for the planet like a nurturing mother, it begins to lower toward our westerly horizon, and complete our days with a beautiful Grand Finale of colors, and lighting patterns besting the greatest fireworks shows known to man. For that reason, I think it is most fitting to call this print The Grand Finale.
This phenomenon of light on the horizon, and all things associated with it, such as the green flash and other lore, not only fascinates me but leads me to include the display in many of my images. Hawaii is well known for the amazing sunsets. So I set off to Sunset Beach on Oahu, to gather an unparalleled sunset for the collection. The setting most known for world-class surf competitions in the winter, provided me with smooth waters for the light reflections in the summer.
Having just waited out a small tropical down pour, I rushed to the scene to collect this image of the balanced elements together: earth, water, sky, and fire.

Amazing Grace! I wish I could throw my hammock on tree! Incredible clouds on over the sun and the reflection on the ocean. Colors are an excellente! WOW! Thanks for sharing!

The lighting was perfect for accentuating the colors of the sky, but I wanted the famous palm of the beach to be of full detail too, so I used a 580EXII flash to illuminate the "front" of the palm tree. After creating this image, the lighting and colors just stood out, to the point that they stole the show from the subject (the palm). It reminded me of fireworks: Pretty bright colors in awe inspiring patterns. To me this was nature's Grand Finale' for a perfect Hawaiian day. After the brief rain, she let it all loose and brought out the colors and patterns that could only be matched by the overwhelming ending of a firework show. That is why I named this image: Grand Finale'Equipment

I have wanted "THE" sunset of my collect for some time, so I set off to, of all places, Sunset Beach on Oahu, Hawaii. To guarantee that I would capture the shot I needed for my portfolio, I knew it was imperative that the sky be laden with clouds, as that is what captures and redirects the light and colors of a sunset. Unfortunately I had to endure 11 horrible days in Hawaii (hahahahahahah) to get the storm I needed. I waited for the rain to pass, and ran out to the beach to being shooting. I knew I wanted the very famous palm in the foreground (and shot it all 11 days I was there to practice and frame the image). In order to capture this, I had to hike up an enbankment and try to stabilize the camera on a tripod on the edge of a slope, standing in brush. Again, on this day, the rain had cleared only moments earlier, so the beach was empty and the clouds were plenty. I shot for the entire sunset (a total of about 20 minutes, and captured a new shot in about 30 second gaps) to get the lighting just right. The fill flash lit the palm and even some of the silhouetted beach (unexpected and welcome bonus of the flash). This image is one of my most popular at art shows, and when first released, was almost bought out by an investor as his company logo for a beach club. I believe that the popularity of this image is that everyone somewhere deep down inside (especially during bad days at work), dreams of being in this scene, and wishes they were there. That is what drove me to create the image!Editing
First I had to sort through the hundred or so images to find THE right one. To some, post processing is a no-no. To me, it is a must, and this image has my "normal" work done to it. In all of my experiences and research, I found that vivid colors are what draw most people to a piece of art. In that aspect, photography is no different than any painting. For that reason I have a standard where I will slightly increase the saturation on the image. This will accentuate any colors that may not "pop" on a raw image. Straightening the horizon and cropping the image to frame the subject are also a must.In my camera bag

The secret to reconstructing this image is the use of a fill flash. Though many don't think of this item as necessary for landscape photography, I could not have had the detail in the palm without the flash. Meter the camera for the sunset, frame the shot, and allow the flash to illuminate the subject, which in this case is the palm. Oh, and a spectacular Hawaiian sunset doesn't hurt either ;) Good luck!
