Behind The Lens

Location

Philadelphia Flower Show

Time

Midday, inside

Lighting

I really didn't have control over the lighting, except by finding the right angles to get the shot I wanted.

Equipment

Canon DSLR and a 55m kit lens

Inspiration

I loved the colors in the flowers, the light shining through and the resulting shadows. I thought the flower show would be a fantastic photo opportunity and in many ways it was but I hadn't realized how static the displays would be. So it all came down to being willing to squat, sit, and even lie down in front of strangers in order to get the shots I wanted.

Editing

As a rule, I do very little post-processing. No pre-sets or anything. I straighten, crop, and correct colors/lighting. That's about it.

In my camera bag

Camera, lens (usually two or three), filters, back up battery and SD cards, hood, and microfiber lens cleaning cloths - it pains me when I see someone walking around with a $5,000 camera and filthy lens!.

Feedback

Well, don't be afraid of looking weird in front of strangers. Shoot from every angle whenever possible. And take a metric ton of images, even if it is of the same subject. Shot 48 out of 50 will be the one that works.
