Behind The Lens

Location

Every Spring hundreds of cyclist participate in the Holland 100 bicycle race, in Holland MI. The route winds throughout country roads around Holland/Zeeland. I took this photo from the tailgate of my pick-up truck in the parking lot of my church. The glistening dew was heavy on the cornfield across the road, making for a fantastic sparkling pan.

Time

This shot was taken at 7:45 a.m. The sun was behind the cyclist creating a superb rim light on the rider and a gorgeous reflection off the heavy dew that settled on the cornfield over night.

Lighting

I loved using the sun as a backlight for this photo. Standing on the tailgate of my pick-up truck gave me just the right angle for everything to come together.

Equipment

Canon 1DX with EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM.

Inspiration

The colorful jerseys caught my eye, as the first flight of cyclist passed by the house. So I grabbed my camera and parked my pick-up at the end of the church parking lot. I took some shots on the tailgate. Later, I walked across the road and and took a few shot from the ditch using the blue sky as a back drop. Also, there were cyclist of all shapes, sizes, colors, sexes that made for a great variety of photo opportunities.

Editing

The only post processing was a little cropping.

In my camera bag

Canon 1DX and Canon 70d, EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, EF70-200mm f/2.8L II USM, Lee soft and hard graduated ND filters and a 10 stop "Big Stopper" ND filter, Really Right Stuff 40 Ball head on a Gitzo tripod, two Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT all in a FStop Tilopa Backpack.

Feedback

I used f25 aperture setting to slow down the shutter speed to 1/40 to blur the background. I used the burst mode so that I had a number of photos to pick from. Panning takes a little practice, moving the camera to follow the subject to obtain optimum focus.
