Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on an old abandoned farm yard in Saskatchewan, Canada. My family owns the land, so I have access to it at any time. It was pretty dark when I trekked out there though the snow, but luckily the Northern Lights lit up the sky.

Time

If I can remember correctly, this photo was taken around 10:00 in the evening. I use an app called Northern Eye App, which tells me when the Aurora Borealis are out and about. I got a couple shots here at the car, then had to race home to catch the New Years fireworks.

Lighting

I used an off camera flash to light up the car when the northern lights started dancing. I used a 3 second shutter speed which caught the northern lights nicely. I had never shot this type of storm so a lot of it was experimental. I really didn't know what I was doing, but that is where the fun lies.

Equipment

Camera, tripod, off camera flash, and it doesn't hurt to have a partner while you are standing out in the cold to keep you company.

Inspiration

I used the Northern Eye App on my phone so it told me that there was going to be a pretty awesome energy storm that night. Luckily I was heading out to the farm, and I didn't have to work so I had no reason not to get out and shoot the northern lights

Editing

I used Lightroom to bring out some of the colours, but I am not very good at editing so I try to keep it as natural as possible.

In my camera bag

Currently I have a Nikon D7100 for my body and I own three lenses: 35mm, 50mm, and an 18-200mm. I have a Metz off camera flash, but don't use it a lot as I am still learning. I usually bring a tripod along and have a couple of neutral density and polarizing filters.

Feedback

Pay attention to the weather, live far enough north to freeze and be able to see the Northern Lights, and bundle up, it gets cold out there. No matter if your picture turns out, you'll be mesmerised by the dancing of the lights.
