I made this photo while photographing on the Texas Gulf-Port of Houston.Time
This was the pipelines'"break time" (10-10:15am), and for the workers on the dock.Lighting
On this morning, the light was intense, with crisp shadows. You can feel the heat of the sun through your clothes. When making a photograph of people, watch the eyes, and craft your lighting to your storyline.Equipment
Manfrotto Tri-pod with a 3 way tilt head. Mounted was my Pentax 6x7 with a 55mm Ashai Lens. I used Kodak 120 Tri-X film, and processed n+1 to raise the higher values, and to create contrast to match my vision of the day. Extra batteries. Plenty of film.Inspiration
I wanted to add the human element to the storytelling of the Port of Houston. I set up the tripod, and attached my Pentax 6x7 to it. Because of the language barriers, we were not able to talk to each other. I pointed to the camera, and they just looked at me. The character and description in their faces show and tell a story. These were hard working men, making ends meet. Their rewards were Coke and cigarettes.Editing
I scanned the negative to digitize it.In my camera bag
For this adventure, I had a Manfrotto Tri-pod with a 3 way tilt head-quick release plate, Pentax 67 with a 55mm Asahi Lens, 120 Kodak Tri-X film processed n+1 in HC110B to raise the higher values within the photo and add contrast to match the light and day. Pentax spot meter.Feedback
I had an interpreter. I imagine I would use my Pixel translator in a similar situation. Going into a situation such as this, it is more than suggested to have someone who is known at the site be with you for introductions. Texas gulf is hot and humid-you will sweat lots-so bring extra T-shirts to change into.
