Behind The Lens

Location

I made this photograph in the Superstition Wilderness located in Apache Junction Arizona.

Time

This is the time of day when sunset and moonrise are about equal. Meaning that there is still light from the setting sun to illuminate the shadows of the subject.

Lighting

The way to balance the time when the moon rises and the sun is setting is to first look on your calendar to see when the moon will be full for that particular month. Then watch the moonrise beginning a few days before the actual full moon. The moon will rise 50 minutes later each subsequent day. You can also use apps and charts to determine where and when the moon will appear. Sometimes I get lucky as when I made this photograph. I refer to this as a photographic perfect storm where light, time of day, subject, weather, drama in the sky coincide. Beautiful autumn light made this photograph.

Equipment

This was a case where I had my Nikon P7100, and Gitzo tripod. I used a modified zone VI spot meter. Metered the moon and monitored with the meter to place the shadow on the mountains on a zone III1/2.

Inspiration

What inspired me to make this photograph was the perfect storm of elements coming together. My heart inspired my vision.

Editing

I darkened the sky in photoshop, burning in to darken this area of the photograph. This is an image where I had the information of the scene on my sensor.

In my camera bag

I am a large format photographer. I use a modified Wista, 2 lenses, one a bit wide, and one a bit long. My modified pentax meter, filters, and sheet film. I also use a Pentax 6x7, and a Holga to obtain a different look. I use an extra long Gitzo, with a 3 way head. When I do use digital, I use a Nikon P7100, and Nikon D810. I'm exploring the camera phone in image making as well. Because I use digital all day for my work a day, I prefer film on my off hours.

Feedback

Patience and a sense of humor make a photographer. I would get to know your camera so well technically, that when you envision an image, the settings are hand in glove. The camera is only a tool, your heart is your artistic vision that sees clearly the technical settings of your camera tool. Your settings reflect what you see. I would also make prints. Prints will show the digital sins, and will help one become a much improved photographer.
