Behind The Lens

Location

I made this photograph on the Lower Salt River in Arizona.

Time

The sun was breaking through storm clouds late in the day. The sun felt good with the cool air and breezes that were part of the storm. However, because I was using a large format camera, I needed to wait for the intervals between the breeze for the marsh plants to stop moving.

Lighting

This type of light in Arizona is called squall light. During the monsoonal storms a phenomenon occurs where the mountains turn light even white in tone. This is indescribable but breath-taking to be a witness to.

Equipment

I used a 4x5 modified Wista; a gitzo carbon fiber tripod with a tilt-all head; the lens used is a Schneider 210 symmar-S. Being that the sun was a warmer color balance, I used a yellow filter to lighten the mountains, darken the shadows the salt cedar trees, and the water.

Inspiration

I love the quiet of this area during the time of year this photo was made. The mountains, the light, the storm, and being there made this photograph wonderful to visually appreciate. The image immerses the senses.

Editing

The negative was printed on Adox MC110. I did selected areas of burning and dodging. No crop was needed. This was scanned on a flatbed.

In my camera bag

My love is large format. I use a 4x5 Wista and 2 lenses. A spot meter and tripod. Tri-X film. I have been using an old Pentax 6x7 to make Infrared images. I also use a Nikon D850, and I use a Google Pixel 3 to make notes of the photographs made, and I use the camera for GPS and map data.

Feedback

I was in the water, and happy to have a pair of waterproof boots. Patience and a sense of humor for the length of time it will take to make a photograph where the elements dictate when they will allow you to trip the shutter. If you miss this small opportunity, you miss making the photograph. A keen eye, sense of vision, prolonged involvement, and intense concentration.
