Location
In my elderly father's back yard. When I sold my home and moved in to be his caretaker, I brought along my Bee Balm to plant in a strategic spot along a north fence. It allows me to sit comfortably with my camera and iced tea and wait for something to happen!Time
It was later in the afternoon on a rather overcast day, so my light was disappearing fast!Lighting
By placing the Bee Balm along that northern fence, I took advantage of the late afternoon to early evening light.Equipment
Camera: Canon EOS 70D Aperture: f/5.6 ISO: 1000 Shutter Speed: 1/5000 Focal Length: 420/1 Tripod, comfortable chair, ice tea and patience!Inspiration
I just adore these beautiful tiny and fierce birds! They are quite fascinating and it's fun to see the personalities and habits emerge. This one would spend about two minutes flitting from one plant to the next, then shoot off in the same direction each time. Five to seven minutes later, there he was! Hummingbirds are known to be quite territorial and this one would invariably chase off all the others, including a chickadee that had come in for sunflower seed on a feeder nearby!Editing
A bit of cropping and lightening, and a dash of sharpening on the bird itself. In my camera bag
Normally? There is no "normally" in my world! It really depends on what I'm shooting or where I'm going. If I'm in my kayak, it's either my 100-400L lens or my 300L with a 1.4 extender. I don't always bring a tripod as it becomes a bit cumbersome.Feedback
Patience, patience, patience! If you see something that you just know you need to get a picture of, start clicking. Do a little chimping, then figure out what it is that caught your attention. Consider coming in at a different angle, or, if the lighting isn't the greatest, shoot into it for a whole different effect.
