Behind The Lens

Location

Living in North Idaho, I often take jaunts into Montana looking for wildlife. Typically, it's an over-nighter so I sleep on a pad in the back of my rig which allows me to get an early morning start. One night was a bit chillier than usual and I snuggled down into my sleeping bag a bit further than usual. The next morning found me in a crystallized world. A hoar frost had settled on the countryside and made it so magical as the sun struggled to shine through the clouds. I could see bits of blue sky and had to wait a bit before heading out due to the freezing fog keeping everything so dark. I drove around back country roads, taking pictures of unique visions. These plants (Common Teasel) are prevalent in the Montana countryside and I've been known to take some home for a dried plant arrangement. It was so pretty st see the frost covering its spikes, I just had to get some shots of it.

Time

Early morning, about 7:30am

Lighting

The lighting wasn't the greatest due to the fog that was still hanging low. I tried to get my settings right- honestly with four external storage units (packed away in a storage unit due to me moving!), it would take a bit to find the exif data on it!

Equipment

Most likely this was a couple of cameras back, so I think it was my Canon 40D and probably my Canon 300L with a 1.4 extender on it.

Inspiration

Just the contrast in light and dark as well as textures- very cool!

Editing

I try not to spend much time in front of a computer. Typically; this entails a bit of cropping (not too much) and changing it to black and white as there wasn't much color in the picture anyway. I would have bumped the contrast a bit as well.

In my camera bag

It really depends on the situation. For outdoors and wildlife these days, I have a Canon 7D Mark II and use a Canon 100-400 IS L lens. If needed, I use a tripod, but that's rare. I keep it pretty simple.

Feedback

Don't discount the simple, plain or ordinary. Isolate your subject. Consider the Rule of Thirds but don't swear by it- use your intuition!
