Location
This photo was taken in my hometown Hamburg, Germany. A photo-friend of mine has two Jack Russell Terrier, Jerry and Loona. Jerry is absolute crazy about football. Our aim was to take some action-shots. So we met early in the morning in a park with a big meadow, especially for dogs.Time
It was mid-march. We started at sunrise. The meadow was full of dew. We put on our waterresistant clothes and lay down on the meadow. A low angle is very important when shooting with animals: Eye level.Lighting
When the first sunbeams reaches the ground, the light was magic. We try out shots in different directions. I prefer backlight shots because of the spraying dew-dropsEquipment
The picture was taken in the year 2011. The camera was a Nikon D300 (1,5x crop) with the Nikkor 500 f4 VR Lens. My favorites are wildlife, action and Sports. In this case I don´t use a tripod. It´s too much unflexible. Remember: The dog was running like crazy all around us. I was sitting on the lawn and hold the camera up on my knee.Inspiration
My favorites are animals (wildlife) and actoin&sports. I prefer animal photos when there is some kind of action; Flying, running, jumping, fighting, hunting and so on. In my opinion it´s quite difficult to get those shots (especially wildlife). Often you will miss the special moment. But when you get it, it´s very, very satisfying. Thats the thrill for me. I´ve had no special picture in my mind. When you´re on location you have to analyse the circumstances: Light, background and so on. Then you choose a place to stay. And then you need patience, skill and luck!Editing
In 2011 I shot only JPGs, no RAW. There is almost no post-processing in this picture. In my camera bag
When I shot wildlife, action&sports: D4 and D800, 500VR, 300VR, 70-200. When I shot landscape and travel: D4 and D800, 14-24, 24-70, 70-200.Feedback
Action shots need a lot of practice. The more time you spend doing that the merrier. You´ve to master your equipment. Watch the subjet you want to capture and learn. Behaviour, movements and so on. When you can divine what will happen next, you have an advantage. Take a low angle: Eye level! Watch out for special circumstances: Nice light, rain, snow, fog, wind and so on. Don´t give up!
