Behind The Lens

Location
I captured this photo in Masai Mara, Kenya, September 2013
Time
Just after sunrise. The golden houers in the mornings and in the evenings are short. You must been well prepeared and need a good portion of luck. And an excellent Driver/Guide of course!
Lighting
It was a bit difficult. The lioness was far away. There was a little river between us and the lioness and also many bushes and high grass. We had a small window with free sight and no chances to change our position. Due to the bushes there were many shaddows. I waited till the head of the lioness were out of the shadow and uses a long lens (500mm)
Equipment
Camera: NIKON D4 Aperture: f/4.0 ISO: 800 Shutter Speed: 1/1250 Focal Length: 500/1 I use a beanbag, shooting out of a Landcruiser
Inspiration
I love nature photography, especilally wildlife. I´m on the hunt for special moments. Seeing a lioness carrying her cub in her mouth was such special moment. As a wildlife photographer you have no influence in the behaviour of the animmal and only a little bit in the circumstances like weather, lightning, point of view etc. So you have to react fast. The settings of the camera mut be well done, you have only this one chance to get the capture. It was thrilling, your heart beats fast. Loocking at the camera monitor to check your captures afterwars was nailbiting. You know, this was a very special moment. Were the AF ant the lightnig correct?
Editing
I do a very little post processing. Cropping, sharpness, brightness
In my camera bag
When going on safari, I normally use two or three camera bodies. Lenses: 500mm VR, 300mmVR or 80-400VR, and a 24-70mm
Feedback
The most important thing when going on safari in Masai Mara, Kenya is the Driver/Guide. He is the one who knowes whre the animal are. If you have a good guide he has experience with photographers. He knows the distances you need belonging to your lenses. And the right position to the sun. The car is also very important. Nearly 100% are Lancruisers and Landrovers. If you like to shoot birds in flight a car with open roof (and therfore no sun protection!) is useful. The more less persons in the car the better (and more expensive). You have the freedom to get the best position inside the car to take the photos and there will be no movenent in the car from other people. Be patient, trust your driver/guide, be prepared and react fast. The best moments will be gone within seconds.
