Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot in the Carriage House studio in Washington DC.

Time

This was shot indoors, in the night.

Lighting

A continuous striplight was used to light the contrasting skin tones. I had especially wanted the harsh and narrow strip of light to reflect on the duskier skin as well as leave a void of light in between the two bodies.

Equipment

I used a 5d mk III with a Tamron 70-200mm F/2.8 lens. Continuous lighting was used in place of flash. This image was shot at 200mm focal length, 1/160sec, f/7.1, ISO 100.

Inspiration

This image was shot with desert dunes in mind. Similar to the dunes, I wanted to create contrasting contours of the two wonderful ladies of different skin tone.

Editing

I processed the RAW image through photoshop CC to tune the exposure, white balance and bring out the clarity on the foreground image and applied a film preset through Analog Efex Pro.

In my camera bag

My lenses include the Canon 24-105mm F4, Tamron 70-200mm F2.8, Tokina 12-28mm F2.8, Canon 100mm F2.8 and a Sigma 50mm F1.4 art. I have a couple of polarizing filters and a LED strip light for an occasional use to indulge in some long exposure creativity.

Feedback

Bodyscapes and playing with shadows require experimentation. Some prior examples of abstract bodyscape images help identify a concept, maybe even a storyline. A human body has so many curves that can be manipulated to create fascinating abstract. This image was just scratching the surface.
