Behind The Lens

Location

The Key Bridge, as seen from Ft Armistead, just across the Patapsco River from Baltimore.

Time

Just after sunrise, around 7:40 am

Lighting

I took many shots as the sun was rising, in the other direction. One rule of thumb that any photographer should not ignore is, look at the scenery all around you. This was just that rule. After the sun broke the horizon, I started to look around me, and saw the warmth of the morning sun reflecting off of the Key Bridge. The soft golden light was awesome, and I knew that a long exposure with the Lee Big Stopper would be perfect.

Equipment

I loaded my Canon EF 17-40 f/4 with the Lee Big Stopper and the Lee 0.9 GND. This was mounted on the Canon 5DMKII on a Manfrotto Pod and remote triggered with a Youngnou.

Inspiration

I love Blue Hour, and am crazy enough to wake early enough to chase it. Often enough, I am pumped enough with coffee and Red Bull, that I want to keep shooting, light permitting. This was one of those days.

Editing

Minimal RAW to JPG in LR5 and PS5. Level, color and contrast tweaks ands some noise reduction due to the 2 minute exposure.

In my camera bag

Canon 5DMKII, Canon 7D and occasionally a Life Pixel modified T1i. Canon 17-40 f/4L or 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L ISII, Canon 50mm f/1.4 Lee Filter system, Lee GND filters, SinghRay RGND Yongnou wireless triggers Wrigleys Cobalt gum.

Feedback

When shooting sunrise/sunset, always look around. Sometimes, the best shots can be found away from the sun.
