Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada.

Time

I took this photo on October 31, 2015 at 1:24 in the afternoon.

Lighting

I wish I could say that I carefully planned this shot, but that was not the case. I was taking photos of a high school football game, and when I looked up over the field to the mountain behind our town, the lone golden larch tree in the midst of the mist, caught my attention.

Equipment

I was using my Canon EOS 70D camera with a Canon EF 300mm f 2.8 lens. I had this lens on my camera because I was at a football field taking photos of a football game.

Inspiration

The combination of the contrast between the larch tree and the rest of the evergreens, along with the mist. It had been raining most of the day and it was a cool day. I thought the image captured the mood and climate conditions.

Editing

Yes, I sharpened the photo and applied a filter in Photoshop to bring out the detail in the trees without diffusing the clouds too much.

In my camera bag

When I am shooting sports, like I was on this day, I usually just carry my 1.4 extender to increase the focal length of my 300 mm lens.

Feedback

Always keep your eyes open for exceptional or unusual shots. As I mentioned, I was taking photos of a football game when I looked up in the mountain and saw this image. I was lucky to be using my 300mm lens as it brought me that much closer to the mountain scene a few miles away.
