Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the resort community of Naramata in British Columbia. I was an instructor in a Rotary Youth Leadership program. We were cooking dinner for the participants in the program.

Time

The photo was taken around 6 in the evening.

Lighting

I was looking to take some photos of the participants enjoying the barbecue when I noticed the smoke rising from the grill above the cheeseburgers. I quickly snapped a shot before the burgers were served. Nothing special about the lighting. There were no harsh shadows as we were in a covered area.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon EOS-1D Mark II N with a Canon 70 - 200mm 2.8 lens. The photo was shot at 1/640 shutter speed, hand held.

Inspiration

I was taking photos of the participants when I noticed the smoke rising from the grill and thought it would be a good photo.

Editing

I did some sharpening and also increased the vibrance to bring up the color of the cheese.

In my camera bag

I usually shoot with either my Canon 70 - 200 f2.8 or my Sigma 28 - 70 f2.8 lens.

Feedback

Always be aware of what is around you. Sometimes the best photos are not planned but are of subjects that appear unexpectedly.
